Carpon™
A Natural Urinary Acidifier
Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD) is a common veterinary complaint. Many people know it by its earlier name, Feline Urological Syndrome, or FUS. Most often present in male cats, its most obvious symptoms are an inability to urinate and blood in the urine. FLUTD is caused by the formation of crystals which block the urethra, preventing urination. This is always unpleasant for the cat and sometimes results in toxicity and vomiting or other adverse effects.
During the 1970's, veterinary experts discovered that these crystals are composed of magnesium ammonium phosphate. This led to the development of the "low ash" concept -- preventing FLUTD by reducing magnesium compounds in the diet. More recently, scientists dispelled this theory by actually adding magnesium chloride to the daily diet of cats. They found that it was not the magnesium itself, but the alkaline quality of some cats' urine that allowed the crystals to form. In cats with acidic (not alkaline) urine, crystals did not develop. The acidic urine dissolved existing crystals and prevented the formation of new ones.
For thirty years, Dr. Belfield has been treating cats with FLUTD. The traditional compounds for acidifying urine (ammonium chloride and methionine) were effective, but he was concerned about their long-term toxicity. Out of this concern he developed Carpon, a natural urinary acidifier without toxic side effects.
Carpon embraces all of the qualities and characteristics to make for an exceptional urinary acidifier. It is composed of a natural botanical berry extract (vaccinium macrocarpon) in tablet form which prevents the formation of struvite crystals. It has proven to be the "magic bullet" needed to treat, prevent, and control FLUTD -- without drug side effects or toxicity.
Carpon for Canines
Though, not as prevalent as in felines, canines are also susceptible to struvite. Most often they occur as bladder stones and due to their size and density, they must be surgically removed. However, upon the surgical removal, Carpon administered daily, will prevent a recurrence and further expensive surgical procedures. As with felines, should there be only struvite crystals, Carpon will dissolve the crystals in a matter of hours.
The cause for struvite formation in bladder urine is not known, however it is known that there is an inability for some canines and felines to maintain magnesium ammonium phosphate in soluble form. This translates into these pets having to be maintained on a urinary acidifier their entire lives.
